That after all that planning, you're not getting any epic stories as you get bogged down with the mechanics and learning the ins and outs of DF. The beginning is kinda tedious, and planning, and updating jobs, and thinking about specialties, and more planning for military, and farms, and booze. In short build because it is fun and interesting not because it is best and efficient. Try an ice fort (but bring lots of brewing material as water is a problem in these) Someone mentioned building their dining hall behind a waterfall and that sounds awesome. If you have a mountain see if you can secure the peak, build a mighty fortress up overlooking the land with lots of fortifications to shoot your enemies. Kind of starts me off with a little above ground sprawl that ends up usually being my trade depot, with an ever increasing fortress bellow. I am kind of addicted to taking only raw ingredients with me on embark now, wood (if no trees), magnetite, few copper bars, an anvil, seeds, cloth (some of each kind to avoid mood panic) lobsters, 3 cats, 3 dogs. The resulting fortress that expands as you increase in dorfs is very chaotic and cool. Yeah a fun way is mentioned by /u/TheNosferatu in this thread, build stuff only as you need it see how that goes, assume you will only have your starting 7 and take enough supplies to survive a year with no farming or brewing. but the reward of the glorious stories makes it worth the effort. clunky, unintuitive, challenging to figure out how to do stuff, all wrapped up with a horrible UI. In many ways, the stories of dwarf fortress -are- better than the game itself. The stories will come as your fortress lives (and dies) so take the time to pause the game and see what's going on. I wound up with archers in that corridor in front of the fortifications shooting down at goblins. When I finally got to that step being able to build fortifications, a tunnel along the fortifications, and then still having space for doors was really useful. I built my fort a few (three) squares away from the walls of the hill I dug into because I had an idea of having a trench around my fort. Just don't forget about defenses as you build your fort. Build it.ĭon't get caught up in the BEST way to do everything or "optimal" fortress design. Move on to the next objective like setting up a communal bedroom. Start with what you need to do immediately - like set up farming.īuild the farms and set up the dwarves to do farming. My advice, as a relatively new and inexperienced dwarf fortress player, is this: Kitfox Discord #modding-discussion channelīronzemurder and Oilfurnace (illustrated) A three step guide:ĭownload DF Classic or install the premium version from Steam or Itch.ioįollow the quickstart guide on the wiki, or see other learning resources (below)Īsk any questions in the ☼Bi-weekly DF Questions Thread☼ - it's always active See the reasons for our rules here, and please report any problems!ĭF can be intimidating, but we're dedicated to helping new players.
